Summary
Understanding how to use a camera can be incredibly beneficial in both personal and professional contexts. In today’s world, where we are constantly surrounded by images, having the ability to capture moments and memories is more important than ever.

In the context of nature and wildlife photography, knowing how to use a camera can help you capture fleeting moments with confidence. In other regards, an understanding of the camera and how it records light  can make photographing family vacations, a wedding, or a birthday party, or simply  preserving memories that will last a lifetime that much easier. Instead of relying on someone else to take photos for you, knowing how to use a camera can give you the freedom to capture exactly what you want, when you want.

A full understanding of how to use a camera can be a valuable skill in a professional context. With the rise of social media and digital marketing, businesses are relying more and more on high-quality visual content to promote their brands. The image has become tge default initial method of communication over the internet, not only in business, but in personal communication as well (think of how Facebook connections with family invariably start with imagery).
Using a camera can be a creative (as well as cathartic) outlet that allows you to express yourself in a unique way. Whether you’re interested in landscape photography, wildlife photography, or street and travel photography, knowing how to use a camera can help you capture images that showcase your unique perspective and style.

Finally, learning how to use a camera can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Photography is an activity that can be enjoyed alone or with others, and it can be a great way to explore your surroundings and appreciate the world around you.

In conclusion, understanding how to use a camera can be incredibly beneficial in a variety of contexts. Whether you’re looking to capture important memories, advance your career, express yourself creatively, or simply have fun, learning how to use a camera is a skill that can enrich your life in countless ways.

itinerary
Day 1 – Introduction to the Camera and Exposure

Photographers meet at 11:00 at Olifants North. We start with a basic overview of the camera and the different settings.
The first day covers essential camera settings and a core explanation and understanding of how light is controlled by the camera through aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings.

There is a light lunch provided from 12:30-14:00.

We break at 17:00 with some potential ‘homework’ for participating photographers.

Day 2 – Exposure and Focus

The morning starts at 9:00 at Olifants North with a continuation and recap on exposure. In the morning we continue with understanding the histogram and how to use it to perfect exposure for wildlife photography.

After a light lunch we go into auto focus and getting the right settings dialed in to cameras for photographing moving subjects.

After afternoon tea there is a brief introduction to colour theory in photography and how we can use colour to create images with impact.

Day 3 – Digital Asset Management and RAW Conversion

Photographers meet again at 9:00 at Olifants North. The morning session starts on understanding how to ingest and manage digital files so that they are easier to sort and find images.

After tea there is a session on the basics of RAW conversion using editing software like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One Pro. The session is not meant to be exhaustive, but an introduction to digital editing.

The last session of the day (after lunch) is a guided editing session where photographers work on images for the final crit review. This is an excellent opportunity to get feedback on images, as well as general commentary on images and how to improve them.
